Bridge funding for FAS faculty supported by the Science Development Fund (SDF)
Bridge funding provides short-term financial assistance to established researchers supported by the Science Development Fund (SDF) who have a history of successful external funding but are currently facing a funding gap due to a recent grant ending or a pending application under review.
The bridge funding period is usually less than a year. Requests for bridge funding can be made at any time. They are considered as they are received. Requests are reviewed by the applicant’s divisional dean and the Vice Provost for Research.
To apply for bridge funding, eligible faculty may email a request to their divisional dean.
Eligibility and key principles:
- Faculty hired with SDF support are eligible to apply for bridge funding.
- Must “bridge” to future funding – there is an expectation that the funding helps secure data/results that make future funding more likely.
- Should have a compelling reason, e.g. losing talent/skills at Yale that took a long time and significant investment to build.
- Does not replace current funding. Bridge funding typically does not provide summer salary or postdoctoral support.
- It is funding of last resort! All other means of supporting research should be exhausted before bridge funding is used.
What does bridge funding cover?
- Maintaining research staff during a funding gap
- Covering costs of research supplies or animal care
- Data collection necessary to maintain research momentum
