Appointment to the research faculty ranks is available to persons holding the PhD or MD degree or having equivalent training. 

Appointment, reappointment, and promotion requests

All appointment, reappointment, and promotion requests to and within the research faculty ranks should be directed to fas.dean@yale.edu with a copy to the relevant senior associate dean: John Mangan for humanities units, and Bob Burger for social science and science units. Email requests should include the following in bulleted format in the body with the necessary supporting documentation (as one PDF) attached:

  • First and last name of appointee
  • Desired rank
  • Appointment type: initial appointment, reappointment, or promotion
  • Term length, including start and end date
  • Proposed salary amount
  • FTE% (and any FTE split allocations as relevant)
  • If applicable, salary increase percentage from current appointment
  • Funding source(s) with exact amounts/salary percentages
  • Confirmation of all funding sources
    • FRMS confirmation of grant funding sources
    • Academic unit lead administrator confirmation of internal unit funding sources
    • Central funding sources requested to be approved by relevant senior associate dean in the FAS Dean's Office

The relevant senior associate dean will request additional information if necessary and provide their approval of the request in the thread including the bulleted information. Academic unit staff should save this email thread as PDF for attachment to Workday (document category Faculty – non-Visible) as part of the hire, reappointment, or promotion business process.
