Academic unit chairs and staff should refer to FASTAP 2016 Guidance for Chairs & Staff

Clock Year 1: Initial appointment as assistant professor (AP1)

The initial appointment as assistant professor is made for five years, with a term beginning July 1 or (in some cases) January 1.

Departments and appointing programs (academic units) engage in a rigorous international search “with the objective of appointing the finest and most promising faculty.”

Clock Year 4: Review for reappointment as assistant professor (AP2)

This review must be conducted by the penultimate year of your initial assistant professor appointment (clock year 4).

The review will follow either the academic year or calendar year timeline depending on your tenure clock start date.

Refer to the criteria for reappointment.

To be reviewed prior to the 4th tenure clock year requires special permission. Consult your academic unit chair for more information; your divisional dean and the dean of diversity and faculty development are also available to discuss the early review process.

Should you or your academic unit have questions about your particular timing options, they can be directed to Sarah Logan, Assistant Director of Faculty Affairs.

External, academic unit, and TAC reviews

At least 3 external referees will review your materials, assess your strengths and areas for improvement, and recommend steps you can take to prepare in the coming years for the tenure review. At least two of these letters must come from referees who hold an “arm’s-length” relation to you (that is, who have not served as your teacher, mentor, or research collaborator, or have a conflict of interest).

These referee letters will be reviewed, along with your materials and course evaluations, by eligible voting faculty in your unit and the relevant divisional tenure and appointments committee.

JBPO and Corporation approval

After an affirmative vote of the relevant tenure and appointments committee, your case will be reviewed and voted on by the Joint Boards of Permanent Officers (JBPO) and the Fellows of the Yale Corporation.

Outcome notification

After the relevant tenure and appointments committee vote, you will be informed of the result of your review by your academic unit chair.

After an affirmative vote of the Joint Boards of Permanent Officers (JBPO), the FAS Dean's Office will send you a post-review letter (PRL) summarizing the findings of the review and indicating the term dates of your reappointment. The PRL evaluates your current body of work and professional accomplishment and reports on the strengths, weaknesses, and overall picture of your research, teaching, and service record and any research plans you have articulated for the years ahead. The PRL will become part of your permanent file, and will be included in your tenure promotion dossier when the time comes for that review.

Clock Year 7: Review for promotion to tenure (AOPT or PROF)

This review must be conducted by the penultimate year of your assistant professor 2 appointment (clock year 7).

The review will follow either the academic year or calendar year timeline, depending on the tenure clock start date.

Refer to the criteria for promotion.

To be reviewed prior to the 7th tenure clock year requires special permission. Consult your academic unit chair for more information; your divisional dean and the dean of diversity and faculty development are also available to discuss the early review process.

Should you or your academic unit have questions about your particular timing options, they can be directed to Sarah Logan, Assistant Director of Faculty Affairs.
