About the FAS

The Yale motto, Lux et Veritas, carved in stone above an archway.

The heart of the university

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) comprises 40+ academic departments and programs that span three broad intellectual areas, represented by the divisions of Humanities, Social Science, and Science. All members of the FAS faculty hold appointments in at least one of these divisions. FAS faculty are leaders in research and teaching in these areas; they stand among the foremost scholars and teachers in the world in their fields of knowledge.

FAS departments and programs, along with the departments of the School of Engineering & Applied Science, provide instruction to the students of Yale College and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Through joint appointments and other affiliations, many members of the FAS also carry out their work in Yale’s professional schools or in the West Campus institutes.
