Lecturer-Track Faculty Appointments

For lecturer-track faculty procedures, please contact when applicable the relevant (Sr.) Associate Dean. For English, it is Jason Zentz (jason.zentz@yale.edu), in other Humanities units it is John Mangan (john.mangan@yale.edu), and in Social Science and Science it is Bob Burger (robert.burger@yale.edu).

Throughout these procedures, when a lecturer or senior lecturer is considered for initial appointment or, along with senior lecturer II, reappointment or promotion in one of the Area Studies Councils of the MacMillan Center, the Center functions as the department, and the director of the Center functions as the department chair.

The lecturer track includes the ranks of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Senior Lecturer II.

The procedures linked in the blue column on this page apply to searches, reappointments, and promotions for instructional (non-ladder) lecturer-track faculty. Forms and templates for these processes may be found in the Instructional (Non-Ladder) Appointments Document Library.

Types of Appointments

There are two types of lecturer appointments in the FAS: single year/semester appointments and multi-year appointments.

Criteria

Appointment to the rank of lecturer, senior lecturer, or senior lecturer II is appropriate only for candidates whose responsibilities include regular teaching. Faculty members holding these ranks will normally have earned the PhD or its equivalent or another appropriate terminal degree. Please refer to the appointment criteria for senior lecturer and senior lecturer II, as set forth by the Steering Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Terms of Appointment

Lecturers may be appointed to a term varying from one semester to three years, and senior lecturers and senior lecturers II may be appointed to a term varying from one semester to five years, in each case depending on professional accomplishment, development as a teacher, programmatic needs, and available resources.

The University does not typically make initial appointments at the level of senior lecturer II.

Process

Reappointments of one semester or one year require the approval of the FAS Dean’s Office, but do not require the appointment of a search committee or a department faculty vote. Department chairs instead, in consultation with their faculty colleagues, make their recommendations directly to TRAC.

Similarly, if the department wishes to request additional teaching resources for current instructional faculty, they should submit their recommendations directly to TRAC.

When the allowed number of values is above 1, a "Multiple Settings" expandable appears under the "Advanced" tab. In the original Special Requests settings, all of the checkboxes in that expandable are checked, which added fields to allow the frontend user to show row weights and add more items.

In this updated version, I unchecked all of those boxes and set the number of empty items to 3 (I'm assuming the original intent was to show 3 textareas here?).

Appointment

Senior Lecturer

Five Years

A lecturer in a multi-year appointment may be considered for promotion to senior lecturer; typically, the promotion review occurs in the penultimate year of an appointment (in lieu of a reappointment review). In unusual circumstances, promotion may be considered earlier, if authorized by the FAS Dean’s Office. No lecturer may be reviewed for promotion more than once in any three-academic-year period. A lecturer reappointment review cannot be converted midstream into a promotion review at the request of the candidate, review committee, or department faculty; rather, consideration for the rank of senior lecturer must be approved by the Teaching Resource Advisory Committee (TRAC) at the outset of the review as described below.
