Ulrich Bio Picture

Katie Ulrich joins the FAS as Assistant Professor of Anthropology. Ulrich’s research focuses on how the environment, raw materials, and resources become meaningful in new ways as scientists develop biotechnologies for making green or renewable products.

Ulrich’s current book manuscript, Raw Materiality: Making Sugarcane into Sustainable Futures, examines sugarcane-based bioproducts, such as biofuels and bioplastics, made in Brazil. This research has also been published in Cultural Anthropology, Engaging STS (Science and Technology Studies), and Anthropological Quarterly.

Ulrich received a PhD in Cultural Anthropology from Rice University, a BA in Anthropology and Biology from Haverford College, and was previously an Academy Scholar at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies and a lecturer at San Francisco State University.
