Jarcho Bio Picture

Julia Jarcho joins the FAS as Professor of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies. She is a playwright and theater artist, and a scholar of literature, theater, and critical theory. Her work across disciplines tends to focus on fantasies about writing itself, often in relation to sexuality, violence, and theatrical performance.

Jarcho is the author of Throw Yourself Away: Writing and Masochism (University of Chicago Press, 2024) and Writing and the Modern Stage: Theater Beyond Drama (Cambridge University Press, 2017), as well as the collection Minor Theater: Three Plays (53rd State, 2017).  

Jacho’s play, Grimly Handsome, won a 2013 Obie Award for Best New American Play. Her other plays include Marie It’s Time (2022), Pathetic (2019), The Terrifying (2017), Every Angel Is Brutal (2016), Nomads (2014), and Dreamless Land (2011). Her plays have been produced by her New York-based company Minor Theater, the Royal Court Theatre, and Clubbed Thumb, among others. She was previously at Brown University, where she directed the MFA program in Playwriting.
