Benedito Machava

Benedito Machava joins Yale as an Assistant Professor of History. A historian of colonial and post-colonial Africa, his research focuses on liberation struggles, decolonization, nation-state building, socialism and socialist experiments. His current book manuscript, The Morality of Revolution: Reeducation Camps and the Carceral Regime in Socialist Mozambique, 1974-1990, examines the politics of public morality, carcerality and citizenship in Mozambique during the socialist experiment. He has published articles in the Journal of African History, the Journal of Southern African Studies, Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais, and other outlets. His research has been supported by fellowships from the Social Science Research Council and the Guggenheim Foundation, among others. Before coming to Yale, Machava was a Cotsen-Link Postdoctoral Fellow in the Society of Fellows at Princeton University and a Lecturer at University Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo, Mozambique. He holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Michigan.
