Daniel Karell

Daniel Karell is Assistant Professor of Sociology. His research focuses on the interplay between cultural systems and social relationships. One of his current projects examines how individuals’ social relationships shape their engagement with far-right propaganda, and how this engagement subsequently affects their social relationships. Another project explores the effect of extremist propaganda on individuals’ justifications for using violence against others. Daniel’s work has appeared in several academic journals, including the American Sociological Review, Poetics, and the Journal of Peace Research, where his article won the 2018 Nils Petter Gleditsch Article of the Year Award. Before coming to Yale, Daniel was an assistant professor in the Division of Social Science at New York University Abu Dhabi. He has also been a Fung Global Fellow at Princeton University and a postdoctoral researcher at New York University Abu Dhabi. Daniel received his A.B. from Harvard University and his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Washington.
