Faculty of Arts and Sciences scholars named to endowed professorships

Eight members of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) have recently been named to endowed professorships by vote of Yale’s Board of Trustees.

Eight members of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) have recently been named to endowed professorships by vote of Yale’s Board of Trustees.

They are:

Sarbani Basu, whose discoveries have changed our understanding of the structure of the sun and the properties of stars, has been appointed the William K. Lanman, Jr. Professor of Astronomy. Read more

Francesco Casetti, a foundational figure in the field of film studies, has been appointed the Sterling Professor of Humanities and Film and Media Studies. Read more

Ronald Raphael Coifman, who has made fundamental contributions to pure mathematics, leading the field in adapting to the capabilities of the digital computer, and developing tools that have substantially benefited science and technology, has been appointed the Sterling Professor of Mathematics. Read more

Roderick A. Ferguson, a recognized leader in the study of race, sexuality, and American institutions, has been appointed the William Robertson Coe Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Professor of American Studies. Read more

Martin Hägglund, who specializes in post-Kantian philosophy, critical theory, and modernist literature, has been appointed the Birgit Baldwin Professor of Comparative Literature and Humanities. Read more

Matthew Frye Jacobson, who has transformed understandings of race in America, has been appointed the Sterling Professor of American Studies and History. Read more

Alan Mikhail, an authority on Middle Eastern history, global history, and histories of empire and the environment, has been appointed the Chace Family Professor of History. Read more

Wilhelm Schlag, an expert in harmonic analysis, mathematical physics, and partial differential equations, has been appointed the Phillips Professor of Mathematics. Read more
