Dear colleagues,

With midterms upon us, we write with two reminders about grading.

Provide mid-semester feedback on student work

The Yale College Course of Study Committee requires instructors to provide students with feedback on their academic progress by the middle of the term. We encourage you to provide this feedback so that students have an informed understanding of their academic standing in your course, enabling students to take remedial action if warranted.

Record and back up grades

In past semesters, COVID surges, internet outages, and other unexpected events have affected exams and grading. With this in mind, we recommend that you record and back up your students’ current grades in Canvas. While we hope to avoid situations that might disrupt end-of-semester grading and evaluation, we encourage you to plan ahead for any such contingency.

Thank you for your attention to these matters.

Best wishes,

Jeff, Lynn, Tamar, and Pericles
