FAS Welcomes 65 New Faculty for 2024—25 Academic Year

On August 21, the FAS welcomed 47 new ladder faculty and 18 instructional faculty members newly appointed to full-time, multi-year positions at New Faculty Orientation.

Every year, Yale’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences hires dozens of exceptional scholars in academic departments across the sciences, humanities, and social sciences.

For the 2024-25 academic year, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences welcomed 47 new ladder faculty and 18 instructional faculty members newly appointed to full-time, multi-year positions on August 21 at New Faculty Orientation in Yale’s iconic Humanities Quadrangle.  FAS Dean Tamar Gendler, Dean of Humanities Marc Robinson, Dean of Social Science Ken Scheve, and Dean of Science Larry Gladney, hosted the day to welcome new colleagues in the FAS’s academic divisions. They invited colleagues from across the university to help orient new faculty to life at Yale.

Of the new ladder faculty, 22 are in the humanities, 18 in the social sciences, and seven in the sciences. The multi-year instructional faculty comprise seven in the lecturer ranks, five in the lector ranks, and eight Gibbs Assistant Professors of Mathematics.

Before entering the student lounge of the Humanities Quadrangle, new faculty were welcomed with a surprise appearance from campus celebrity and famed mascot Handsome Dan, who gave them well wishes before they embarked on their entry into the Yale community.

Throughout the day faculty attended informational panels detailing mentoring, teaching, and appointment processes in the FAS. 

Panelists included Dean of Yale College Pericles Lewis and Dean of the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Lynn Cooley, who spoke with about resources for teaching on campus. Shelly Kagan, Clark Professor of Philosophy, moderated the conversation.

Jennifer Frederick, the Executive Director of Yale’s Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning, also moderated a panel about how faculty can support students in the classroom. Participants included Crystal Feimster, Associate Professor of African American Studies and American Studies and Head of Pierson College; Thomas Near, Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Head of Saybrook College; Benjamin Polak, William C. Brainard Professor of Economics; and Kathryn Slanski, Senior Lecturer in Humanities and in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations.

Faculty also heard more about student experiences at Yale from Omer Bajwa, Yale’s Director of Muslim Life and Rachel Leiken, Associate Jewish Chaplain in a conversation moderated by Yale’s University Chaplain Maytal Saltiel.
