Dear colleagues,

As we begin a new academic year, I write to encourage you to review Yale’s university-side Faculty Standards of Conduct. Developed by a faculty committee, the Faculty Standards of Conduct reflect a common commitment to respect, honesty, and responsibility. They describe the obligations we share as educators, scholars, and members of the Yale community, and reflect a vision of the university as a place where faculty, students, and staff can thrive. I hope you will review and take these standards to heart.

As you read and consider these standards, please pay special attention to those that concern your role as mentors of students and trainees and as supervisors of staff members. Such relations invariably involve asymmetries in power: use your authority judiciously and with an eye out for everyone’s well-being and professional development.

With best wishes for the academic year,

Tamar
