Expanded eligibility for December 2021 Credit option
Letter from the dean on eligibility for December 2021 Credit option
Dear Yale College instructors and students,
We are writing to provide you with more information about the Credit option we announced in December that will expand eligibility for it.
You may recall that we announced on December 18 and December 23 that Yale College students enrolled in fall term classes with final exams scheduled on December 19, 20, 21, or 22 whose instructors waived the final exam were permitted to choose a mark of Credit instead of a letter grade on their transcript.
This option is now open to all Yale College students who earned a passing letter grade in a class that administered a final examination or assessment on or after December 19, 2021; in other words, it is no longer restricted to Yale College students whose final examinations were waived. Furthermore, Yale College students are permitted to know their grade before deciding whether or not to exercise this option.
Yale College students who wish to keep their letter grade do not need to do anything.
Courses with a Credit option resulting from this process:
- can count toward Yale College’s distributional requirements;
- can count toward the major for every department and program;
- do not count against the regular limit on grades of Credit/D/Fail.
This CR accommodation does not apply to courses in which a student already has a CR under the Credit/D/Fail option.
Yale College students may use this form to request the grade conversion by February 7, 2021.
This option was created to reduce the spread of COVID-19 during a time of surging infections. We hope that this expansion will provide Yale College faculty and students the flexibility to apply the option consistently and equitably.
Sincerely,
Marvin Chun
