Mariana Centanin Bertho

Mariana Centanin Bertho joins the FAS as Lector of Portuguese in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. She holds an MA degree in Portuguese Language and Foreign Language Teaching and Learning from São Paulo State University (UNESP). She came to the US as a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant in 2018-2019 at the University of Arizona. Currently, she is a PhD candidate in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching at the University of Arizona. Her dissertation investigates the phonological acquisition of Portuguese by English-Spanish speakers in higher education institutions in the US (to be defended in August 2024). She also does research in corpus linguistics and learner corpus pedagogy. She is a member of the Multilingual Corpus of Assignments - Writing and Speech (MACAWS) Research Group. She has publications in corpus linguistics, corpus-informed pedagogy, language program administration, and has developed materials for Portuguese curricula.
