Diana Qiu

Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science

Diana Qiu joins Yale University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science as an Assistant Professor in January 2020. Her research focuses on developing and applying ab initio computational methods to predict and understand the excited state properties of materials with applications for optoelectronics, quantum information, and energy research. Her work has helped elucidate the unusual photophysics of optical excitations (excitons) in atomically thin materials, including the effects of screening, substrates, defects, novel quantum phases, and nonlinear response. Prior to joining Yale, Professor Qiu obtained a B.S. from Yale in 2011 and a Ph.D. in Physics from UC Berkeley in 2017. She also spent two years as a postdoc at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab as part of the Center for the Computational Study of Excited-State Phenomena in Energy Materials.
