To: FAS Ladder and Full-Time Multi-Year Instructional Faculty
cc: FAS Steering, FAS Dean’s Office

Dear FAS faculty,

I am delighted to announce that we have opened the nomination process for the 2023 FAS Dean’s Leadership Fellows program. Launched in 2022, this small-group coaching program is designed to support faculty who are serving or may one day serve as leaders of departments, programs, committees, or research groups, and in other roles at the university and beyond. Participants in the program will take part in group coaching sessions and will have opportunities to engage in discussions about academic leadership with colleagues from Yale and other institutions. We welcome self-nominations and nominations of colleagues.

I hope you will consider participating or nominating a colleague. Full details on the Leadership Fellows program are below.

In addition, in the new year we will be announcing the 2023 FAS Leadership Series workshops. These workshops will take place in March and April. More details, including workshop dates and topics, will follow in the coming weeks.

Warmest wishes,

Tamar

FAS Dean’s Leadership Fellows

Up to 10 FAS Faculty members will be selected to be part of this focused leadership development program. Nominations are due by January 27, 2023, and may be submitted online

The FAS Dean’s Leadership Fellows will have regular small group meetings with leadership coaches from Leader Academic. The coaching groups will provide training and support for those currently in leadership roles and for those who may take on leadership roles in the future.

Coaching groups will meet six times between February – June 2023. Meetings will be 1.5 hours long. Participants may be asked to read articles or complete short exercises or assessments prior to each group session. Topics covered in the group will be tailored to participant interest and may include the following:

  • Developing a departmental (or unit level) vision and goals in alignment with the university’s vision and strategic plan
  • Strategic planning and strategic management
  • Effectively supervising staff
  • Motivating and mentoring faculty members
  • Managing conflict and difficult personalities
  • Managing your time – balancing leadership and scholarship

In addition, Leadership Fellows will be encouraged to participate in FAS Leadership Series workshops and will have opportunities to engage in dialogue with leaders from Yale and other academic institutions.

Upon completion of the FAS Dean’s Leadership Fellows program, participating faculty may request a semester of one-on-one coaching support through the Coaching for Success program.

Participants will be selected through a nomination process. We encourage you to nominate colleagues. Self-nominations are also very welcome. Nominees may be faculty who are currently in leadership roles (i.e.: chairs of committees, programs, or departments; program directors; directors of graduate or undergraduate studies, etc.) or faculty who may pursue leadership roles in the future.

We welcome nominations of:

  • any ladder faculty member with a primary or fully joint appointment in an FAS department or program, or
