A Cultural History of Western Music, Volume I

Music has been significant in social, religious, and political ritual, and in education, art, and entertainment in all human cultures from antiquity to today.

Bloomsbury Publishing, November 2023

Pauline LeVen’s publication is the first volume (co-edited with Sean Gurd) of the six-volume A Cultural History of Western Music, and is devoted to Antiquity. The Cultural History of Western Music series presents the first study of music in all its forms – ritual, classical, popular and commercial – from antiquity to today. Readers can either study a period/volume or follow a topic across history. LeVen and Gurd’s volume represents an important step in opening up the dialogue between Classics and musicology; it comprises eight essays by established and emerging scholars in the field, devoted to the topics of society, philosophies, popular culture, politics, education, exchange, performance, and technologies.

Pauline LeVen is Professor of Classics in FAS.
