Winning Yale image brings the beauty of biology into focus
This photo of an alligator embryo, created by Yale’s João Botelho, Daniel Smith, Macarena Faunes, and Bhart-Anjan Bhullar, was awarded a BioArt Competition award from the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.
An image created in the Yale lab of Bhart-Anjan Bhullar, assistant professor and assistant curator in the Department of Geology and Geophysics, has won a BioArt Competition award from the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.
The image, along with 11 other images and three videos, will be exhibited at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.
The winning Yale image (pictured above) is an alligator embryo in the early stages of organ development. Fluorescent labeling highlights the embryo’s nerves (green), muscles (orange), and cell nuclei (blue). Yale researchers use this information to compare alligator and chicken development, in order to identify differences that produce bird-like characteristics.
João Botelho, Daniel Smith, Macarena Faunes, and Bhullar created the image on behalf of the Yale Department of Geology and Geophysics and the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.
