Tonight: Yale students, dean featured in ‘Gender Revolution’ documentary

Katie Couric will tackle the complexities of gender identity in a two-hour documentary that features students at Yale and Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Tamar Gendler. 

“Gender Revolution: A Journey with Katie Couric” will air on National Geographic Channel on Monday, Feb. 6 at 9 p.m. ET. It will coincide with a special edition of National Geographic Magazine devoted to the same topic.

The film looks at the lives of intersex, gender non-conforming, and transgender people in a chronological arc from the womb through childhood, puberty, adolescence, and adulthood. It explores what science currently knows about the subject of gender, why people have gender identities in the first place, and how attitudes towards gender have changed in recent decades. The film also looks at the different ways that gender has been viewed throughout history and in different cultures around the world.

The Yale Medicine website now features a number of stories on this topic, including a video featuring a transgender woman who had gender-affirming surgery, an article about this new program within Yale Medicine (the first of its kind in New England), and a feature about the Gender Program for children and adolescents.
