Celebration of Women in Chemistry
November 10, 2020, 1-3 pm
Female scientists have been trailblazers and pioneers for centuries, but their contributions were often overlooked. In commemoration of the 50WomenAtYale150 anniversaries, the Chemistry Department held a celebration of women’s contributions to chemistry and Yale Chemistry through a virtual symposium. The symposium featured:
Introduction and emcee by the newest faculty member in Chemistry, Dr. Stacy Malaker
Presentations on the history of Yale women in chemistry
Dr. Charlotte Fitch Roberts (first female Ph.D. in Chemistry) by Prof. James Mayer
Dr. Elga Wasserman (leader of coeducation in Yale College) by Diana Wasserman
Unveiling of an exhibit in Sterling Chemistry Laboratory that features nine women scientists who made critical contributions to Yale, science and society. See a short presentation on this exhibit.
Reminiscences and advice from two of these featured scientists, Esther Hopkins and Alanna Schepartz.
Remarks from alumnae Bianca Sculimbrene (College of the Holy Cross), Linda Lohr (Pfizer), Arikha Moses (Galatea Surgical), Jin Kim Montclare (New York University), and Katherine Kayser-Bricker (Halda Therapeutics) on their experiences and advice as women in science
