Anjelica Gonzalez honored with 2018 BMES Diversity Award

Anjelica Gonzalez, the Donna L. Dubinsky Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, has been awarded the 2018 Diversity Award from the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES).

The BMES Diversity Award honors an individual, project, organization, or institution for outstanding contributions to improving gender and racial diversity in biomedical engineering. The award is given for a broad range of activities, including research, education, and service that improve diversity in the biomedical engineering industry and/or academia.

Gonzalez will deliver a plenary lecture at the BMES 2018 annual meeting in Atlanta later this year. Text of the lecture will be published in the Annals of Biomedical Engineering.

“It is my belief that science and our scientific accomplishments belong to society at large, and it is the job of scientists to make clear the value of our research toward advancing the public good,” Gonzalez said. “This means that we should engage everyone, regardless of ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, and academic experience in discussions about science. In doing that, we will increase not only the public appreciation of science, but also the diversity of thought that allows us to push the boundaries of scientific and medical discovery.”

In her research, Gonzalez combines organic chemistry, molecular biology, mathematics, computational modeling, and image analysis to develop biomimetic systems that model human immunological processes. This work has particular significance to wound healing, fibrosis, ischemic stroke and general inflammation.
