TODAY: Alumni winners of Wilbur Cross Medals to present public talks

Four alumni and a former dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences will receive Wilbur Cross Medals — the highest honor conferred by the school and its alumni association — on Tuesday, Oct. 27. The alumni will also present talks that day that are free and open to the public.

Four alumni and a former dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences will receive Wilbur Cross Medals — the highest honor conferred by the school and its alumni association — on Tuesday, Oct. 27. The alumni will also present talks that day that are free and open to the public.

The award, established in 1966, is named for Wilbur Lucius Cross (Ph.D. 1889, English), who served as dean of the Graduate School from 1916 to 1930, during its reorganization into its present form. The medal recognizes distinguished achievements in scholarship, teaching, academic administration, and public service — all areas in which Cross excelled.

This year’s honorees and their talks are:

Carol Dweck (Ph.D. 1972, psychology), the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford University: “Mindsets: Motivation, Willpower, and Peace,” 4 p.m., DL-220, Dunham Laboratory, 10 Hillhouse Ave. (tea at 3:30 p.m.)

Philip Hanawalt (Ph.D. 1959, molecular biophysics and biochemistry), the Dr. Morris Herzstein Professor in Biology at Stanford University: “From repair replication to R-loops in 50 years,” 4 p.m., TAC-N107 auditorium, The Anlyan Center, 300 Cedar St. (tea at 3:45 p.m.)

Jeremy Bradford Cook Jackson (Ph.D. 1971, geology and geophysics), senior adjunct scientist at the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution, scientific director of the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network, and professor emeritus at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California: “Good governance and regulations increase coral reef resilience,” 4 p.m., KGL-123, Kline Geology Laboratory, 210 Whitney Ave. (tea at 3:30 p.m.)

Jonathan Z. Smith (Ph.D. 1969, religious studies). he Robert O. Anderson Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of the Humanities at the University of Chicago.“On Comparison,” a discussion of a pre-circulated paper (for a copy, email kathryn.lofton@yale.edu), noon, WHC-108, Whitney Humanities Center, 53 Wall St. (light lunch).

A fifth Wilbur Cross Medal will be given to former dean Thomas Pollard, honoris causa, in recognition of his extraordinary service to the Graduate School.
