David Knight

David J. Knight joins the FAS as Assistant Professor of Sociology and Black Studies. He is also part of the Justice Collaboratory at Yale Law School. A political sociologist of the carceral state, Knight investigates how communities experience mass incarceration and mobilize in response to it. His research, which uses data ranging from in-depth interviews to large-scale experiments, has appeared in the American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Annual Review of Criminology, among other venues. Prior to joining Yale, Knight was on the ladder faculty at Columbia University. He currently directs the Movements Against Mass Incarceration Lab, a multiplatform research lab and human rights documentation project that uses archival and survey methods to explore the politically contested nature of the prison state.
