Ghazia Abbas
Lecturer in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry
Ghazia Abbas joins the FAS as Lecturer in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. Abbas holds a PhD in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from Wesleyan University, where her doctoral research focused on elucidating the mechanisms of olfactory receptor gene silencing and the role of epigenetic factors in controlling neural identity.
At Yale, Abbas will be teaching the biochemistry laboratory course, where students will investigate the effects of various mutations on enzymatic function and half-inactivation. She will also teach Research in Biochemistry and Biophysics for the Major, a course that supports students undertaking individual laboratory projects under the supervision of faculty members at Yale.
Her pedagogical approach is centered on immersing students in the scientific method and the pathways of modern research. She favors a Socratic method of teaching, utilizing a series of probing questions to encourage students to examine their beliefs and assumptions. This method is designed to foster critical thinking and a deeper comprehension of the subject matter.
