FAQs on Fall 2021 Credit Grade Eligibility

Friday, January 28, 2022

These FAQs are intended to offer clarification on expanded eligibility for the December 2021 credit grade option. Expanded eligibility for the December 2021 credit option was originally announced on January 26, 2022; this policy remains unchanged, while its scope is clarified with examples below.

This credit option applies specifically to those cases where:

a) The course expectations included a final examination that the student was scheduled to take in person on or after December 19.

b) The previously scheduled final examination was not offered in person on or after December 19 (either because it was waived, rescheduled, or reformatted as a remote exam, take-home exam, problem set, paper, or other form of assessment.)

This credit option does not apply unless a case meets both conditions (a) and (b).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Credit option available if my course  had an assignment – such as a term paper or other exercise – due for submission on or after December 19, but did not have an in-person scheduled final exam?

  • No, this doesn’t meet criterion (a). Even if a course had an assignment – such as a term paper or other exercise – due for submission on or after December 19, if it did not have an in-person scheduled final exam, the Credit option is not available. Such assignments, which can be prepared remotely, are considered to have been administered prior to December 19 even if they may have been due on or after that date.

Is the Credit option available if my course had an assignment – such as a term paper or other exercise – due for submission on or after December 19, as well as an in-person scheduled final exam that was scheduled to take place in person on or after December 19?

  • Yes, this meets both criteria. The scheduling of the exam’s administration (leaving aside the assignment) is sufficient on its own for the Credit option to be available.

Is the Credit option available if my  course was formally assigned to a time slot associated with a late-date exam, but no in-person final exam was scheduled to have taken place?

  • No, this doesn’t meet criterion (a). Even if the Registrar’s Office had formally assigned an exam time slot on or after December 19, an in-person exam must have been scheduled by the instructor for the Credit option to be available.

Is the Credit option available if my course did not have an in-person final exam scheduled on or after December 19, but a particular student had an accommodation to take an alternate in-person exam on or after December 19?

  • Yes.  If a particular student was scheduled to take a final exam in person on or after December 19 which did not occur in person, that student’s situation meets both criteria (a) and (b).
