As we near the anniversary of our Covid-related adjustments, we reiterate our gratitude for your extraordinary efforts: your commitment as faculty has enabled our students to continue learning and has sustained our intellectual community. Thank you.
As we wrote in June and October, the pandemic accelerated a long-planned shift to an early registration system for Yale College. We are grateful for the work that you did in the summer and fall that made it possible to introduce early registration this year. We are now beginning the early registration process for Fall 2021 courses. Below you will find a list of key course registration dates. Additional details will be provided in a memo from the Registrar.
We realize that this schedule may feel compressed, but it is necessary to begin early registration for limited enrollment courses in early April if we wish to leave June and July free for research and other activities. The schedule below was developed in consultation with students, faculty, and staff to balance carefully the needs and priorities of our multiple communities.
Please keep in mind the following dates:
Deadline for expanded course descriptions: April 5, 2021
The deadline for completing expanded course descriptions in Canvas is April 5, 2021. (This early deadline is the keystone to a schedule that allows the bulk of early registration to take place prior to the summer, enabling faculty to have a true break from registration- and advising-related work during June and July.)
Application period for limited enrollment courses: April 6-21, 2021
The student application period for courses with limited enrollments will take place from April 6-21, 2021. How the application process works for limited-enrollment courses is largely up to individual departments and to individual instructors. If you are unsure if your department or program runs a centralized process, please contact your DUS.
Early registration period: May 3-28, 2021
Early registration for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors will take place from May 3-28, 2021. Again, by offering early registration in May, we hope to enable faculty to have a break from registration-related activities during June and July.
August registration period: Mid-August, dates TBD
Each year, there are numerous changes to the teaching schedule that take place between April and August. Units with faculty searches in progress, for instance, will not yet have a full picture of course offerings. A second round of registration will take place in the late summer, at which time students will be able to register for any newly-scheduled courses. Our incoming first year class also will register for their courses at that time.
In the coming days, further information on registration for the 2021-2022 academic year will be provided by the University Registrar’s Office.

- Wednesday, March 31. Deadline for departments to update offerings in WEN for courses to be included in the initial publication of Yale Course Search
- Thursday, April 1. Yale Course Search goes live
- Monday, April 5. Deadline for instructors to complete Expanded Course Description in Canvas
- April 6-21: Application period for students to apply to limited-enrollment courses
- April 30: Deadline for departments or instructors to inform students who applied to limited-enrollment courses
