Fabrizio Zilibotti is the Tuntex Professor of International and Development Economics

Fabrizio Zilibotti, newly named as the Tuntex Professor of International and Development Economics, focuses his research on economic growth and development, political economy, macroeconomics, and the economic development of China. His appointment will be effective July 1.

A citizen of Italy, Zilibotti earned a Laurea in Political Science at the Università di Bologna, and a M.S. and a Ph.D. in economics at the London School of Economics. His academic career includes professorships at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona), University College London, and the IIES-Stockholm University, among other institutions. He has also held visiting positions at Bocconi University (Milan) and the Universities of Oslo, Bologna, Southampton, and CERGE-EI Prague. His most recent appointment was as chair of macroeconomics and political economy at the University of Zurich.

Zilibotti has published papers in numerous international journals, including American Economic Review, Econometrica, Journal of Political Economy, Quarterly Journal of Economics, and Review of Economic Studies, among other publications. He has served in several editorial positions, including co-editor of Econometrica, chief editor of the Journal of the European Economic Association, director and managing editor of the Review of Economic Studies, and associate editor of the Journal of Economic Growth.

The renowned economist is a fellow of the Econometric Society, the European Economic Association, the Center for Economic and Policy Research, and CESifo. He is a co-director of the NBER Economic Fluctuations Group on Income Distribution and Macroeconomics. He was president of the European Economic Association in 2016.

Zilibotti is a recipient of the Yrjö Jahnsson award (best economist in Europe under the age of 45) and of the Sun Yefang Award from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences for his article “Growing Like China.” He was awarded the Ciliegia d’Oro (Golden Cherry) prize given to “distinguished personalities in cultural, industrial, sport or humanitarian fields” from the Emilia Romagna region of northern Italy.
