It’s time for chefs to rifle through their recipe files and food lovers to sharpen their taste buds in preparation for the annual Chili & Chowder Cookoff fundraiser for United Way.

It’s time for chefs to rifle through their recipe files and food lovers to sharpen their taste buds in preparation for the annual Chili & Chowder Cookoff fundraiser for United Way.

Hosted each fall by Yale Hospitality, the event brings together members of the Yale and New Haven community to sample chili and chowder recipes submitted by cooks on campus and in local restaurants.

This year’s cookoff will take place 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 21 in Commons dining hall at the Schwarzman Center, corner of Grove and Prospect streets. For a minimum donation of $10, all guests can sample the chili and chowder offerings and vote for their favorites. The $10 donation automatically enters guests into a drawing for roundtrip rail tickets on Amtrak to New York City and a weekend stay at the Omni Berkshire on Madison Avenue.

Yale Hospitality will also offer other lunch items, from vegan and corn chili and chowder offerings to nacho boats, bean salad, complimentary beverages, cookies, and more.

The event also includes giveaways, a silent auction, and several raffles.

A team of judges from Yale and New Haven will select first-, second-, and third-place winners in both a chili and chowder category, and the recipes that receive the most votes from guests will win People’s Choice honors.

For those who want to compete in the cookoff, here are the rules and entrance form. The registration deadline is Monday, Nov. 14.

The Chili & Chowder Cookoff began in 2011. All proceeds from the event go to United Way of Greater New Haven. Last year’s cookoff attracted about 1,000 attendees, who raised $12,000 for United Way.
