Jacobs-Wagner is director of the Microbial Sciences Institute at the Yale West Campus and is also a professor of microbial pathogenesis. The institute is dedicated to exploring the world of microbes and how they govern processes that control the functions of all living creatures, with the goal of gaining a better understanding of the microbial world and its impact on the environment and human health.

Jacobs-Wagner received her M.S. and Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Liège (Belgium). She performed graduate work at universities in Belgium, France, and Sweden. Prior to joining the Yale faculty in 2001, she served as a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University. In addition to her academic appointment, Jacobs-Wagner is an investigator for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She has been director of the predoctoral genetics training program at Yale since 2011.

The Yale professor has contributed scores of articles, chapters, and reviews to edited volumes and journals. Jacobs-Wagner serves on the editorial boards of Cytoskeleton and mBIO, and is the former editor of Microbiology and Molecular Biology Reviews. She has delivered numerous invited talks at universities nationwide and in Spain, Germany, Canada, and the United Kingdom, among others.

Jacobs-Wagner’s honors include the Ely Lilly Award from the American Society of Microbiology, the Women in Cell Biology Junior Award from the American Society of Cell Biology, and the Pew Scholarship Award in the Biomedical Sciences. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
